Valentina Sampaio Becomes First Transgender Model To Cover Vogue Paris March 2017

Transgender model Valentina Sampaio makes her debut as the first-ever Vogue Paris cover person. The decision by editor-in-chief Emmanuelle Alt was not a quiet one. "Transgender beauty: How they're shaking up the world," broadcasts the cover in a bold white font. The March issue is only topped by September in circulation, so Vogue Paris walked boldly into the topic of transgender influence in fashion and style and also as a contemporary issue among human rights activists.

“This cover is about the importance of [human] rights, and that we still need to make progress on an awful lot of stuff,” French Vogue editor in chief Emmanuelle Alt told American Vogue. "“We are living in a world at the moment, what is happening right now, we are stepping back,” she says. “Instead of being in a constant evolution, which is what should happen, human rights . . . they’re not going in a good direction. This cover is about the importance of those rights, and that we still need to make progress on an awful lot of stuff.”

Paris worries that France is having its own Brexit  moment. French lawyer and politician Marine Le Pen is leading France's right-wing Nationalist party in the upcoming elections. Note that while Le Pen's father was an ardent nationalist, she is more circumspect on several social issues. On the topic of immigration, however, she joins the growing worldwide anti-immigration stance. Ms Le Pen argues French citizenship should be "either inherited or merited" writes BBC News. As for illegal immigrants, they "have no reason to stay in France, these people broke the law the minute they set foot on French soil".

The accompanying Vogue Paris fashion story features the Brazilian-born Sampaio modeling the latest spring collections, photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. / Makeup by Isamaya Ffrench; hair by Paul Hanlon.

Nicole Kidman Is Lensed By Yelena Yemchuk In 'Portrait of an Artist' For The Edit Feb 16, 2017

Actor Nicole Kidman has one more big show to go: her Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for 'Lion'.  Leaving her Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations behind her, Kidman changes her focus tothe small screen and her role in the HBO crime drama series 'Big Little Lies'. The project has been no ordinary gig for Kidman and her co-star Zoë Kravitz, the only child of her former love, Lenny Kravitz.  "Well, I knew Zoe because I was engaged to her father," Kidman said in an interview with NET-A-PORTER.com's magazine, The EDIT. "It's all in the family! I love Lenny; he's a great guy."

Kidman and Kravitz shared a brief romance in the early 2000's. Kidman, who married current husband Keith Urban in 2006, told Vanity Fair in 2007 that her engagement with Kravitz did not move forward because "It just wasn't right. I wasn't ready. We weren't ready."

Hooking up with Zoe was a joy, but not every aspect of working on 'Big Little Lies!' soothed Kidman's psyche, the actor tells Jennifer Dickinson.

"I was quite traumatized after [filming] because we would shoot [the violent scenes] repeatedly. I was emotionally and physically traumatized. I'd come back and I'd need Keith to hold me, just to feel soothed. I think it worked on my psyche in a way that I didn't quite realize. As an actress, I don't clock in and out; it does bleed in and sometimes it's hard to process," she explained to The Edit.

Kidman is styled by Tracy Taylor in 'Portrait of an Artist', lensed by Yelena Yemchuk

Patrick Demarchelier Captures 'The Season of Riley Keough' For T Style Spring 2017

Riley Keough, star of 'The Girlfriend Experience' covers T The New York Times Style Women's Spring 2017 edition. Marie-Amelie Sauve chooses selects from Faith Connexion, Ralph Lauren Collection, Cartier, Catbird, Rag & Bone, Wolford, Vicki Turbeville, and Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello for images by Patrick Demarchelier./ Makeup by Lucia Pica; hair by Anthony Turner

Taffy Brodesser-Akner interviews Riley with a good opening:

Riley Keough’s tattooed body is a map to her life: symbols from Led Zeppelin’s untitled fourth album, the Hanged Man from the tarot deck, the Gemini sign that looks like a Roman numeral two, her Mayan calendar birthday. She gets tattoos casually to mark a milestone — a movie shoot, a night out with friends, an adventure with her dad. “It’s like a scrapbook,” she says on a warm December afternoon at a cafe in Santa Monica. “The funny thing about tattoos is you get them and they have this deep meaning, but then you kind of forget they’re on your body.”

Coco Rocha Covers Harper's Bazaar Arabia By Alexei Hay, Talks Nomad (Model) Mgmt

Top model Coco Rocha covers the February 2017 issue of Harper's Bazaar Arabia. Alexei Hay flashes Coco, with styling by Ise White and fashion direction from Katie Trotter. / Hair by David Cruz; Nancy Sea Silver

Coco reflects on her ever-changing looks and platinum hair, saying:

“I’ve done red, I’ve done black, I’ve gone long, I’ve been short. I play a lot of different characters, that’s the kind of model I am. If they’re looking for a David Bowie, I’m the girl... if they want someone who’s going to play an actress without speaking, that’s me. I’ve been blonde for six months now and it’s been fun but I know in a few weeks’ time I’ll be itching for a new look. My favourite look is always the new look.”

On the subject of her ownership and management stake in model agency Nomad Mgmt -- along with husband James Conran -- Coco praises the agency and its founders Damon Rutlandl and Roman Young who discovered her.

“We wanted to move away from big corporate agencies and the cattle call of girls all doing the same thing and instead provide a new way. It’s about doing our part to make sure we see more diverse models on the catwalk, different skin colours and body types. We are starting to see more Middle Eastern models, we have a Lebanese model on our books, Ahmad Chabayta, he’s also a professional soccer player. It’s about changing the conversation.”

Supermodel Karlie Kloss is styled by Phyllis Posnick in 'Spirited Away', lensed by Mikael Jansson for Vogue US March 2017./ Hair by Julien d'Ys; makeup by Hannah Murray

Fashionista has plenty to say about this editorial. Dhani Mau really let's it rip.

When Vogue released its March 2017 cover featuring a group of models — diverse both racially and physically — we were honestly thrilled. It seemed like Vogue finally "got it," "it" being that the world isn't full of white, skinny, blonde chicks and that the magazine should make some effort to represent its readers. But if Vogue took a step forward toward inclusivity with that cover, it took about a million steps backward with the total bullshit that is this Karlie Kloss editorial inside the magazine.

Shot by Mikael Jansson and styled by Phyllis Posnick in Japan's Ise-Shima National Park, "Spirited Away" features Kloss — a white lady from Missouri — dressed up as a Japanese fashion Geisha, engaged in a variety of confusing activities, like carrying a basket of cherry blossoms, looking solemn in a forest and being assisted with what is likely some trendy fitness innovation that involves water and, um, human beer koozies? The spread also includes one of fashion's favorite set-ups when it comes to shooting in other countries: using, as a prop, a decidedly unglamorous, often stereotypical human cultural symbol wearing traditional garb — in this case, a sumo wrestler — posed next to the beautiful white supermodel wearing designer clothing.

Top model Joan Smalls is styled by Grant Woolhead in 'Big On Smalls' lensed by Mariano Vivanco for Evening Standard ES Magazine February 17th, 2017./ Hair by Kayla MiChele; makeup by Niki M'Nray

Interviewed by Tilly Macalister-Smith, Smalls reflects on her family, growing up in Puerto Rico, her boyfriend of seven years, Bernard Smith, founder of the members club Modellounge, and -- yes, Hillary Clinton:

It’s also the reason she voted for Hillary Clinton in the US election: ‘You come from this leader that everybody saw as hope and had such a beautiful message throughout all these years and encouraged people and gave them this uplift, you know.’ Trump’s win, she says, was a ‘shock’: ‘It feels regressive and he’s not inclusive of everyone, and it’s not the message I believe in… That’s not the way I was raised. And I’m not into politics but it’s just the character. It’s a representative of your country, and when you travel people are going to have that association.’
